Common Questions
What is the Canadian citizenship test?
It is a test of your knowledge of Canada and of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, taken as part of the citizenship application. You answer 20 questions (multiple choice or true/false) in 45 minutes, and you need 15 correct (75%) to pass. It is required for applicants aged 18 to 54 on the day they sign their application.
What is the test based on?
Everything the test covers comes from the official study guide, “Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship”, published by the Government of Canada. It has 10 testable chapters, from Canadian history and government to symbols and the economy. MapleTest lets you practise every chapter with questions based on that guide, so nothing catches you off guard.
Where do I take the test?
Most applicants take the test online at home, monitored by webcam, after IRCC sends an invitation. Some applicants are invited to take it in person instead. The test is available in English or French. MapleTest is separate study software that helps you get ready before your invitation arrives.
What happens if I do not pass?
You get 3 chances to pass within a 30-day window. If you do not pass on your first try, you can take the test again; if you do not pass any of the 3 attempts, IRCC schedules a hearing with a citizenship official. Practising here first helps you pass on the first try.
Does this replace the official study guide?
No, and it is not meant to. MapleTest is built for daily practice and review based on the official material. It is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Government of Canada.
