Canadian Citizenship Test FAQ

The Canadian citizenship test checks your knowledge of Canada and of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It is part of the citizenship application process, and most applicants take it online at home.

You have 45 minutes to answer 20 questions, which are multiple choice or true/false. You must answer at least 15 correctly (75%) to pass. The timer cannot be paused: the test warns you when 5 minutes remain and submits automatically when time runs out.

Everything the test covers comes from the official study guide, “Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship”, published by the Government of Canada. It has 10 testable chapters covering Canadian history, government, rights and responsibilities, symbols, the economy, and the regions of Canada.

Applicants who are 18 to 54 years old on the day they sign their citizenship application must take the test. Applicants outside that age range do not.

Most applicants take the test online at home, monitored by webcam, after IRCC sends an invitation with instructions. Some applicants are invited to take it in person instead. Follow the instructions in your own invitation.

The test is available in English or French. You choose the official language you are more comfortable with.

You get 3 chances to pass within a 30-day window. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can take the test again within that window.

If you do not pass within your 3 chances, IRCC schedules a hearing with a citizenship official, who assesses your knowledge in another way. Solid practice beforehand is the easiest way to avoid that extra step.

The test submits automatically when the 45 minutes are up, and whatever you have answered is scored. You get a warning when 5 minutes remain, so keep an eye on the clock and practise under timed conditions first.
